Students from Perrysburg, Lake, Northwood, and Rossford have joined with the Perrysburg Municipal Court to create the Law and Government Explorer Post #2306. The Post is looking for more members.

The program is open to young people who are 14 (and have completed eighth grade) to 20 years old. The group meets at least once a month to learn about careers in law and government through hands-on projects, tours of law facilities and government offices, group discussions, and guest speakers. The meetings are held at the Perrysburg Municipal Court.

The 2011 Ohio Mock Trial case materials from the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education were provided to Explorer members at its October 3 meeting.  District competition is scheduled for February 4, regional competition on February 25, and state competition on March 10-12, 2011. Last year Team Penguins won the district championship to advance to regional competition.

The 2011 Ohio High School Mock Trial competition analyzes an individual’s rights to the body parts of a deceased family member. When an individual dies suddenly in a car accident, the family consents to an autopsy to determine the cause of death.  During the course of the autopsy, a section of the brain is removed and sent to pathology where it is discovered that the brain cells are regenerative (or "immortal").  The decedent’s family has filed a lawsuit against the County Coroner alleging that the coroner has violated the family’s due process rights by sending the regenerative cells to a research lab instead of returning them to the body.

The Post has toured the crime lab of the Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation, the Lucas County Coroner's Office, and the United States Coast Guard Toledo Station.  They appear in Perrysburg's Harrison Rally Day parade in September, then offer face-painting at their Rally Day booth while recruiting new members and working with local police to fingerprint children.  The election of new officers is held in September.

Exploring is part of Learning for Life's career education program. The Perrysburg Municipal Court launched this Explorer post in 2001 by matching their people and resources to the interests of young people in the community. The purpose is to provide our community youth the opportunity to look into the world of law and government as a career choice and to participate in law and government activities.

The annual participant fee of $10 includes liability insurance, local and national activities, and scholarship activities. For more information call 419-872-7915, send an e-mail, or visit the national Exploring website.
