Municipal Court LAW AND GOVERNMENT EXPLORER POST #2306
Students from Perrysburg, Lake, Northwood, and Rossford have joined with the Perrysburg Municipal Court to create the Law and Government Explorer Post #2306. The Post is looking for more members. The program is open to young people who are 14 (and have completed eighth grade) to 20 years old. The group meets at least once a month to learn about careers in law and government through hands-on projects, tours of law facilities and government offices, group discussions, and guest speakers. The meetings are held at the Perrysburg Municipal Court. The 2007-08 Ohio Mock Trial case materials from the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education should arrive in October. The case to be argued this year will feature a clash between a church's free exercise of religion and a city's desire to prevent a public nuisance. In this year's case, a church is attempting to carry out its religious mission by allowing homeless persons to camp on church property. But due to concerns related to crime and the public health, the city has begun dispersing the homeless persons from the church grounds. The church files a lawsuit against the city, seeking an injunction that would prevent the city from dispersing the homeless persons whom the church allows to live on its property. The church argues that the city's actions unconstitutionally burden the church's free exercise of religion, as guaranteed by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. District competition is scheduled for February 1, regional competition on February 22, and state competition on March 6-8, 2007. Last year Team Casey won the district championship to advance to regional competition. Team Belazis was runner-up. The Post has toured the crime lab of the Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation, the Lucas County Coroner's Office, and the United States Coast Guard Toledo Station. They will be in the Harrison Rally Day parade on September 15, then offer face-painting at their Rally Day booth while recruiting new members and working with local police to fingerprint children. The election of new officers is held in September. Exploring is part of Learning for Life's career education program. The Perrysburg Municipal Court launched this Explorer post in 2001 by matching their people and resources to the interests of young people in the community. The purpose is to provide our community youth the opportunity to look into the world of law and government as a career choice and to participate in law and government activities. The annual participant fee of $10 includes liability insurance, local and national activities, and scholarship activities. For more information call 419-872-7915, send an e-mail, or visit the national Exploring website.
